Editor's Review of VirtualBox

VirtualBox has made some improvements to reliability since our previous review of the software. When last I visited VirtualBox (version 1.6), I liked its USB support though it was a tad buggy and invoked the host machine's add hardware wizard. I also appreciated its ability to open VMware machines, though I found the process of loading a VMware hard drive instead of importing the machine settings file unintuitive. Fortunately, with version 2.04, USB support is a lot more solid. Alas, importing VMs remains unintuitive, with no mention of the process that I could find in the help file. On the other hand, version 2 allows you to open Microsoft Virtual PC VMs--a real boon if you want to move up to the more competent VirtualBox without losing your existing machines.

The other significant version 2 improvement is support for 64-bit guest operating systems (the VMs). When you're running a 64-bit host (the OS you're running the VMs within) that is. This eliminates the 4GB memory limitation and is most useful for server implementations. There's also some interface improvements for the various versions, and faster SATA performance when accessing partitions directly.

Now that VirtualBox lets me open and edit my older Virtual PC 2007 VMs, I've switched for good. However, I do keep VMware Player installed for the occasional esoteric VMware VM that won't run on VirtualBox.
