Editor's Review of Pugnax

Pugnax scans a list of Web sites of your choosing and lets you know when those sites have changed. It's not meant to act like an RSS reader, which pulls in new posts from a site's feed, but instead tracks more technical changes. It's probably most useful for site designers or IT staff.

Get started by giving Pugnax a URL and choosing whether you want to look for changes to the entire page, displayed text on the page, a change in the overall size of the page, or certain keywords. You can define many different such watches, and organize them into different tabs or sections. You can also decide how often sites are checked for changes.

Pugnax minimizes to the system tray and changes its icon to a yellow exclamation mark when a watched site changes. The program interface shows when sites were last checked and last changed.

You can view a history of when changes occurred and also bring up a window to compare before and after versions of a page. But in my testing, some sites (such as pcworld.com) displayed script errors when we tried to compare before and after changes. Pugnax saves its own versions of sites that it uses for these comparisons, and the saved versions leave out images to save space. The error might mean that other parts of the saved pages are also missing, or that the program window used to compare doesn't process all the scripts on a saved page.

If you're a site designer or other techie who wants to see when and how particular pages change, Pugnax could be a good tool for you. But if you're an everday surfer who wants to keep up with the latest info on your favorite sites, you'll want an RSS reader instead.
